Crew Member
"There’s always support as you’re doing the role."
Transcript[00:01] My name is Chelsea. I have
[00:03] worked here for three years and my role
[00:06] is crew member.
[00:08] Back when I started at McDonald's, I was
[00:11] very quiet very withdrawn very within myself. I'm pretty
[00:14] much sprouted into who I am today. On shift
[00:17] I'm very much an energetic, jokey person. Like
[00:20]I will use you have a laugh. I feel like I've been supported and valued
[00:23] by people on shift. There's always gratitude going around.
[00:27] And there's always there's always that support there as
[00:30] well as you're doing the role.
[00:32] Yeah, best thing the people, the customers.
[00:36] Flexibility around what days you can't work, what days you can work.
[00:39] Being able to do things with people in store like arranging to
[00:42] maybe meet out and go the other places and just really having that
[00:45] connection within the crew
[00:48] at your store.
[00:50] It's a very lovely thing to have.
[00:52] I still have people that I talk to today that have left the store and
[00:55] move on to different jobs for that that friendship stays there.
Shift Leader
"You have the opportunity to develop and progress, McDonald’s has such a great training programme and has supported me to become a Shift Leader."
Transcript[00:01] My name is Akeem. I've worked
[00:03] at McDonald's for about five and a half years and currently a shift manager. So my
[00:06] role as a shift manager is making sure quality
[00:09] service and cleanliness are at the
[00:12] highest standards it can be while I'm in the restaurant. I'm making sure all
[00:15] the customers that I've connected on that day have had
[00:18] a great visit. So I'd say a typical day as a shift manager
[00:21] is walking in greeting all your
[00:24] staff members, then doing a store walk around.
[00:27] So you start from the outside of the restaurant you'd work
[00:30] all the way inside and making sure you always viewing it from a customers
[00:33] point of view and seeing what they want to see. I'll say
[00:37] how McDonald's has supported me. It's just they always give you the opportunity to
[00:40] develop and progress. They've got such a good training program
[00:43] to become a shift manager. There's amazing training for
[00:46] whatever you want to do McDonald's.
[00:49] So I'll say how McDonald's supported me throughout my studies
[00:52] is they're always very flexible with their approach. So at work I've received
[00:55] the employee of the year award because of all the hard work I did
[00:55] for that year and it's just nice to see that McDonald's shows like
[00:58] support and appreciates all the hard
[01:02] work you do in the restaurants. I'd say my favorite thing about working at McDonald's
[01:05] is the people that I work with like such a diverse
[01:12] and just a great bunch of
[01:15] people. It just makes the job so much easier. I think
[01:18] McDonald's has helped me to help develop as a person. It's kind of made me a lot
[01:21] more confident because obviously they've trusted me to be a shift manager
[01:24] and they've given me that sense of responsibility.
Customer Experience Leader
"McDonald’s help me do the job I do by letting me be myself."
Transcript[00:02] My name's Roland.
[00:03] I'm a customer experience leader
[00:05] and I've been with McDonald's three and a half years now.
[00:07] My role in McDonald's is looking
[00:10] after the guests as they come in
[00:12] and making sure that they're happy, uh, they want
[00:15] to come again, and I think they deserve to be looked after.
[00:18] I used to have my own business.
[00:20] I used to have a fish and chip shop.
[00:22] The reason why I chose McDonald's is, um,
[00:24] after I sold my business, I basically wanted to semi-retire.
[00:28] My wife and myself used to go into McDonald's once a week,
[00:31] and that was our day at night.
[00:33] And, uh, I just outta curiosity,
[00:34] I thought I wonder owned what late working here.
[00:37] So instead of retiring, I uh,
[00:40] ended up working for McDonald's.
[00:43] McDonald's helps me to do the job I do
[00:47] by letting me be me.
[00:48] That's what I love about it.
[00:50] I don't have to be anybody else.
[00:52] I can just walk in and be myself and look after people, look
[00:56] after the guests on, on the dining area.
[00:58] Tips for somebody starting at McDonald's.
[01:01] I would say just be yourself.
[01:03] Be natural and work to the best of your ability.
[01:07] So what I'd like to think I could be able
[01:09] to do in the future is to be able to work more
[01:12] to the customer service side, to try
[01:14] and train people up to help them
[01:18] bring out the best in their selves.
[01:20] I love the fact that I get the feedback of, of guests.
[01:24] It just gives you a little bit of satisfaction.
[01:26] The last four or five year have been absolutely brilliant.
[01:31] What I'd say to anyone now is give it a go.

At McDonald’s, we are working hard to take the necessary steps towards a more sustainable business and future.
In 2021, we launched our first (and certainly not the last) net-zero restaurant. Watch this video to find out more about our new, ground-breaking store!
How often do I get paid?
This can vary depending on whether you work in a franchised or company owned restaurant. Typically, it can be every 2 or 4 weeks for hourly paid employees, and monthly for employees on a dedicated salary.
What type of shifts will I be doing and how many?
Our restaurant hours range from location to location, but over half of our restaurants are open 24 hours a day. We schedule most shifts to suit you, but also take working time legislation and our business needs into account.
What should I wear to work?
Just one of the benefits of working at McDonald’s is that you don’t have to worry about what to wear to work, we will supply you with a uniform.
Does McDonald’s promote its employees?
Definitely. We highly value talent and always aim to encourage employees to remain within our business. To put it into perspective, half of our Executive Team started in restaurants. At McDonald’s, there are no limits to how far or fast you can progress.
How old do you need to be to work at McDonald’s?
This will depend on your location within the UK & Ireland as the date you can start work will differ depending on your location. Please note Work Experience opportunities are open to anyone over the age of 14.
Is your online application process secure?
Yes. Privacy is important. So we make sure all personal information you provide is completely protected from unauthorised use.
Can I apply for more than one vacancy?
Yes. You can apply for as many vacancies, in as many locations as you wish! But we’ll only consider one of your applications at a time. So, be sure to think carefully about what role(s) you do apply for and where you wish to work.
How long will it take to apply online?
Our application process is almost as fast as our food. It should only take between 10-15 minutes to complete the online application. The specific time frame will differ depending on the role you are applying for.
Why is my local restaurant not showing any vacancies?
All our restaurants advertise their vacancies right there on our website. So if there aren't any listed this means they’re not currently hiring.
What does 'franchised restaurant' mean in a job listing?
A franchised restaurant is a restaurant operated by a local businessperson trading under the McDonald's name. Currently over 88% of our restaurants in the UK & Ireland are franchised. But, from a customer point of view, there's no noticeable difference. For employees however, there will be differences between a company and a franchised restaurant. For instance, franchised restaurant workers are employed by the franchises themselves. We list any further differences that you’ll need to know in the individual job details.
If I’m not successful, can I apply again?
Yes, you can apply again, but make sure you create a new application.
Will I get charged to apply for a role at McDonald's online?
As part of the application/ recruitment process you will receive alerts/messages from our AI online recruiter Olivia. Message & data rates may apply dependant on your contract, please check with the account holder first. Message frequency varies.
What documents should I provide as proof of eligibility to work?
Before we can employ you, we are required to verify your eligibility to work in the UK & Ireland. Acceptable documents to evidence your right to work can be found here. You’ll need to provide original documents such as a valid passport or a valid UK/Ireland visa (with a college letter listing term dates, where applicable). Only original documents will be accepted.
What type of questions do you ask at an interview?
The interview is an absolutely vital part of our hiring process. Without it, we wouldn't get a proper picture of what kind of person you are, and whether you'd be a great fit at McDonalds. The interview will normally involve a set of questions around values and attitudes and will allow the interviewee to really show us why they're the right person for the job. For instance, we might ask for an example of times you've worked as part of a team and how you made a difference to that team. In short, we look for people who have the right attitudes and behaviours to deliver a great customer and colleague experience; we hire for qualities and potential, rather than qualifications.
What prospects do I have working at McDonald's?
Our employees tend to stick around. Partly because it's a fun, sociable and flexible place to work, but also because there are opportunities to progress into roles with more responsibility. In fact, 9 out of 10 of our restaurant managers, and 1 in 5 of our franchisees, started out as crew members behind the counter or in the kitchens. That's an unbelievable stat that we’re very proud of. We've also been recognised as a leading employer over the years, offering award-winning learning, nationally-recognised qualifications, comprehensive benefits and flexible working arrangements, as well as a well-proven career path.
